Paintball Hurts, But Is Still a Blast
This website was previous owned by a company called X. O. Industries. I couldn’t find much information about the company on the wayback machine. But basically the website was used as an online resource and e-commerce site for players and lover of paintball, woodsball, military simulation and other games related to paintball.
The company used to make their own paintballs and organize events, tournaments and competitions for paintball lovers.
They also offered competitive rewards to the winning participants, may be as a move to woo the lovers of their game to shop for the equipments and gear used during the game from them.
A little about the site’s history
I don’t know whether the company still operates on another website or not. But this one went on from 2004, till sometime in 2007.
I have been thinking what to do with it since. But it is until recent that I found myself falling in love with these games though I’ve never participated in any. All in all, I soon might join a paintball team and have some experience about the game.
In the meantime, I collected some interesting posts from several paintball lovers and I’ve already published them. You can access them by clicking through various posts below…
I’ll tell you a story of how I came to love Vancouver
It happens that my grandmother lives there and I had to go to see her when she was sick. I ended up loving the place and now I live there permanently. It was not an easy decision since my parents back in the U.S. wanted me to live there. But with my will, I moved to Vancouver. I fell in love with place for so many things. The people are nice; there is so much fun and good food.
How I learned about new sports
Back at home, I never knew anything to do with BMXing. But now I am a pro who takes part in major competitions. This was the first new sport I learned when I got here.
The next one was paintballing. At first I never knew what this was all about. But I took time to learn. Well, paintball is a sport where you play against a group or individuals. It is played to eliminate opponents by targeting them with dyed water capsules. The team; which remains with more opponents in play emerges victorious.
The rules of the paintball game
At first, I thought that people used a real gun to shoot. But I soon learned that there was a specific one that was intended for the sport. When you play, you should make sure that the dyed water capsules do not land on your face or else you are eliminated. It is a game of wit and the one who doges the shots wins the day. It is simple once you learn it. Although, it may be challenging if it is your first time to play it. Back at home I never knew what this was. Hence I took time to learn. I may not be such a pro. But I can make a few dodges before someone gets me.
My grandmother is always supportive of my welfare and that is why she bought the paintball gun when I expressed my interest in it. I knew coming to Canada was the best choice since back at home my dad used to mock me for my playful nature and often made bad remarks of my academic performance. But here my granny and cousins are very supportive of what I do.
Why paintball is becoming a big sport for me
I like pacing and witty sports. Paintballing to me is such a sport. It takes pace to beat an opponent as well as being witty to dodge the dye. I remember one of the weekends when we had a paintballing competition during a breast cancer event. My cousins told me that sports in Canada are used to support charity events and in Vancouver paintballing was among such games. During that game, I meant a great impression and I have now joined a professional team that represents our neighborhood in regional and national competitions.
One of the best things about pacing sports is that you have to be on a healthy diet. My grandmother is very strict with meals. She prefers vegetarian diet and we all have to eat at home. I first struggled to take on this new diet since back home I sued to eat junks. It is all working well for me on the weight loss front. I have managed to shed 30 pounds in 6 months and I’m looking forward to shed even more. When I miss a meal at home, I have to explain to my grandmother and promise not to repeat. What a loving grand mum I have!
Why Vancouver will always remain in my heart
Before visiting my grandmother, I never knew much about Canada. But that has changed since the first time I set a foot in Vancouver. The place has so much to do. There is lots of sporting activities, good places to see and I love the food. I am trying to convince my sister to come over here. Although that may be a problem; since my mum may not allow her to leave. But I feel at home here.
Paintballing has become part of me and I am always looking forward for the next competition. One of my cousins is the captain of our side and I like the way he handles things. He is the senior in our team. But he listens to what each one of us has to say.
This Changed Me
Throughout my life since I was kid, I participated in several outdoor activities and had a real good share of fun. One game that I used to love; especially while in college was playing paintball. I was so good at shooting that I earned the title ‘Eagle Eyes’.
But that was almost five years ago. After graduating with a degree in law and entering the job market, I never participated in the game again. I may have considered it a childhood game. But here I was, a modest person as I considered myself to be ; which meant that I shouldn’t go soiling myself in such games.
Since I got employed I considered participating in games like golf and other indoor games where I would meet other personalities in the industries for networking and such stuff. I might have been wrong or right. But that was my opinion. I had resolved to leave behind all this life after I got out of college and landed a good job and that was what I exactly did.
I Was Proved Wrong
But last summer I was proved all wrong. I happened to meet a beautiful girl who I immediately fell in love with. Everything about her was what I yearned to see in a woman. I invited her a couple times for dinner and other dates. Although, it all seemed like she was not interested in me. I didn’t know why.
I felt that I could be heart-broken if I pushed her to let me know the truth if she loved me or not. As days went by, I felt that she was drifting further from me. I called her one day and requested to see her that evening. She wanted to turn down the request. But I insisted and she gave in.
That day I had resolved to know the truth from her ; whether she loved me or not. And I did ask her. As confidence as she always was, she didn’t hesitate to tell me that I was not the man that she was looking for. She felt that I was too modern to even get my hands dirty a little bit. Thus I wasn’t her type.
This really made me feel like I was not myself. It was an honest answer; which left me wondering why she had said that. But I couldn’t stand to lose her. I needed to do something. That is when the idea of a paintball date came in mind.
A Little Greasy
I checked with the previous paintball club that I used to attend back then; and was surprise to realize that they were still in operation and scheduling some fun events as it was back then. I booked a place to participate over the weekend and sent faxed the tickets to my dream woman.
I had this fear that she might disregard all that and fail to come. But that weekend I was there on time. I hired the necessary equipment and waited. Sure, she arrived though a little bit late. Luckily, the event had not yet started. She dressed in her gear and soon we joined others in the event.
Everything was so overwhelming and my girl couldn’t help. But marvel at my shooting precision. It was all fun as I saw her admiring my skills and I knew she now could see the extent I could go to more natural. By the end of the two games that we took part in, she was so happy and that sealed our love.
As we travelled to Long Island, I felt overwhelmed that I had been chosen as part of a team; which was to participate in the much revered Cousin’s Big Game. If you don’t have prior information about this event; it is one of the most admired Woodsball competitions; which attracts several hundred woodsball players each year. Our trainer had thoroughly prepared us and we looked forward for a landslide victory with the likes of Peter, Kyle and Walker who were exceptional marksmen. We chatted and sung songs and made fun of each other throughout the hectic journey.
I particularly felt overjoyed
The reason is because this was my first event that I would be taking part in despite having practiced for almost four years. To be sincere, I was never that good at shooting paintballs initially. With time, I had gotten better. Although, that might not be what guaranteed me a place in the team. There are several factors that I could attribute to this; like my discipline. But I think my innate desire to encourage and motivate my team mates was what made our coach to have me among the team.
Though a little bit tired, we arrived in Long Island well and still energetic. Since we had two days before the event kicked off; we figured out that we had ample time to get to know the surroundings better; so that we would be at a position to participate in the event. To our surprise; this was not the case since the event organizers refused to allow us citing preparations for the competition were still going on. Thus we had to spend the two days idling around.
The Big Game
The day for the big game finally arrived. I was very eager to participate and show that I also a good marksmen. We were all up early and got dressed for the competition. Our trainer ensured that we all had the necessary safety garment and that all the equipment required was functional.
However, the objectives were much challenging and numerous than we had anticipated or worse still than we ever had practiced for before. This posed a great challenge and threatened our much anticipated victory. We had to come up with a plan; which would enable us get the victory through the various challenges posed by the different levels of play.
Our first task was to recover our flag
This was an easy one and with the help of my fellow rangers; we worked all our best to recover the flag. Then we were tasked to protect our flag while my fellow gunners would try to pull our opponents flag. This was not an easy one. We worked as a team as our trainer had always preached to us.
Within twenty minutes, we had our opponent’s flag. As were the rules, most points are collected at this juncture. But our opponents were not ready to lose. The kept shooting and challenging us as they attempted to retrieve their flag to a point that we started retreating because we never wanted to lose any points stupidly.
We didn’t want any of us eliminated because we had to earn some extra points to have the eliminated person back into the combat (this of course meant losing some points). But as the pressure mounted; it was imperative that we sacrifice one of our team members as we attempt to take our opponents flag to our ‘base camp’.
The Swift Ranger
Peter was the one to who volunteered to be sacrificed. He did this by destructing our opponents while Kyle dashed with the flag towards me as I covered him. Swiftly, he handed it over to me so that I could proceed. I wasted no time. I grabbed the flag and dashed towards our camp. However, my speed was uncontrollable that I never saw a root; which was protruding on the ground. I hit the root so hard with my left leg that I tripped. Both my gun and flag flew past me.
However, I felt a throbbing pain on the lover part of my leg. But this was momentarily. This was because I passed out. Then I woke to find myself in a hospital with my colleagues on my bedside. I was glad when they broke the news that we had won. As a matter of fact, I was sad too that I had fractured my left leg.
A Famed Hero
My late Aunt Sandler was a great military personality. I may have not seen her during those days when she used to be part of our national defense forces. But the medals and caps that adorn her house attest much to how great she was.
This always makes me admire her
Unfortunately, during one of their training sessions, she suffered a severe spinal injury and was confined to the wheel chair. That was before I was even born. So sad about that.
However her love and devotion for our country never died. She continued to work for the military. But only routinely at the offices. I usually feel sorry for her about all this; especially when she narrates to me her experiences while in combat or in the battlefield. I can’t help but wonder how brave she must have been back there. Anyway, it makes me admire her more; so is my admiration that great that I also longed to join the military one day.
The Dying Wish
She always knew about this because I often talked to her about it, and she would encourage me to keep up the spirit till I’m through with my college studies. As part of her motivation, she would often purchase video games revolving around mission execution and combats for me. At times I would be at her place during the weekends and we would play together or compete. Most of the times I would win- although she was always quick to claim that she let me win. Whichever the case, the victory would always make me feel better.
On one weekend before joining college, I went to visit her. We spent the better part of the afternoon chatting and playing combat games. Before I headed back home that day, she came up with a suggestion that I wholeheartedly accepted. She wanted to see me in combat. But since it was early, she suggested that I join her military simulation team. There wasn’t one in within our municipality. But she told me that she would make arrangements so that I could join one in the neighboring town and practice with them.
A Enticing MilSim Paintball Game
Within a fortnight, I was part of ‘The Granges’, a military simulation team that my aunt had me join. She ensured that everything was catered for me well. This was a place that I stayed for the next three months; practicing different combat techniques, mission planning and swift mission execution. Though I had no prior experience, I was quick to get along with others and some one of the best team players.
The experiences and events always made me feel as if I was a real army officer. I loved everything about the training and simulations that we had. I learnt about the needs to attain some objectives using limited resources, and the need for team work to be able to advance through different situations. These are some of the things that I learned back then and made me what I am today.
My first simulation happened after the three months. It was a tournament; which was planed against a rival group and my teammates and I really looked forward to win. During the event, my aunt was present, so was my dad.
The Army in Me
The game started at a fast pace, and every participant tried all their best not to be eliminated from the competition. It was a tough game. We all tried our best and I was able to shoot and eliminate four rival players. However, this being my first game got me thrilled so much, that I tried to prove my worth only to be eliminated so early than I had anticipated. After getting eliminated, I went to join my folks in cheering for our team. My aunt was so proud of me and this made me feel happy within. The most unfortunate thing is that my team lost the tournament.
After the game
Then, went to my aunt’s place that evening for dinner. It was a surprise to meet my mum and sister there. They had arrived to prepare the dinner. After dinner and some wine, we chatted a bit before my aunt broke the sand news. She had Paget’s Disease; which was in her late stages and won’t be with us for long.
The hectic and wonderful day became gloom. Not much was said that evening after my aunt broke the news. Everyone seemed affected. Before we left for home, she gaiety talked about how she wanted me to join the military one day. She was quick to claim, that she had achieved that as she watched me in ‘combat’.
A month later, she died. Fast forward five years, I’m part of my countries national defense forces and will always be what my aunt saw in me.
Every year since I joined my new place of work I really enjoyed how our bosses came up with unique ideas of uniting all the workers while all along motivating us. This is usually done through worker’s incentives and bonuses. But the most encouraging and most anticipated mode of encouraging us is through a retreat. This is an event; which occurs once every year and sees that all workers are taken for a weekend out at the most convenient place; which induces cohesion and team work among all co-workers.
Last year’s retreat however was the most exciting of all the events that I had earlier attended while working at the firm. Although it was a two-day event at a local beach in my area, everything about the event was exception; from the organizing to the activities that we all took part in.
A Rainy in the Paintball Fields
Perhaps the most exciting of all was playing paintball. I don’t know whose idea it was. But I honor the brilliance. Although we spent the first day enjoying ourselves as is the tradition, the next was to be spend playing together or with another co-worker or even a boss.
The day started well and the skies were all clear and bright
Being a lover of chess, I spent the morning hours playing against my immediate supervisor and I enjoyed beating her in all the five games that we played. I must have been so much into chess, that I didn’t realize that there was another beautiful game underway ; paintball. The company had hired all the necessary equipment and almost everyone had prepared for the game.
My boss and I only realized what was happening outside when we heard cheers; and ran outside to meet everyone rowdy as they chased each other with the guns. Luckily, it was the warm up session. I hurriedly prepared and off we went playing around the beach and in the nearby woods.
Then it started raining
The rain is what made the game more interesting. There was laughter and fun as we were encourage to eliminate any worker that we felt that one couldn’t get along with better or a boss who was hard on a worker.
Amid the rains, we played the game for almost two hours. I loved the way I targeted my bosses. It was really fun. After the first game, another one was organized. This time it was all junior male workers versus lady workers who teamed up with the senior workers.
It was fun as we all the juniors engaged the seniors and the ladies until we won. I particularly loved how I targeted a female co-worker who always played hard on me by rejecting my date offers till she called it unfair and left the field.
Better Cohesion at Work
By evening, we were all wet, both from the rain and the paintball game and much exhausted. As we had dinner that evening, it was a happy moment for all of us as we had relieved most of the tension; especially that between the bosses and junior staff as well as other worker-related misunderstanding.
